Working on Holidays

One of the “perks” of working in a hospital is that you get to work on holidays. My group of NICU hospitalists has a rotating schedule of holidays. Each year I work one of the big 5 ( Thanksgiving, xmas eve, xmas day, NYE, or NYD) and one of 5 agreed upon minor holidays. This year my minor is July 4th. I worked July 4th all 3 years of residency and was the chief on call for July 4th my chief year. Working on July 4th is becoming a Dr B. tradition. Fortunately , I’ve been able to watch the hot dog eating contest each year. When I was senior resident I watched it in the Peds ICU with a 7 year old patient and his father. Good times.
